I had a ball at the Cumberland County GOP golf outing, literally. I spent time with all the great people who turned out, chatting a bit before the tournament. I know how much works goes into putting together a successful golf outing. There are many details, not least of which is the weather. Hats off to Bill Holmes and the Cumberland County GOP for a job well done. The whole day was a big success. Even the rain held off until just after the last group came off the course. Team Dean ‘08 looks forward to defending our title next year. We will be there, Bill!
Rule #1 required us to have fun, and that we did. But we were also able to hunker down and play some golf. I have always enjoyed competing. As the youngest of seven, I had to compete for almost everything. I took to golf later in life. In my 20's I was an avid runner. In fact, I ran the Marine Corp Marathon in Washington, D.C. twice. That experience really tested my own physical and mental limits, and I found that I enjoyed the test. I have come to appreciate golf for similar reasons. Like all sports, golf is a test of oneself. Anyone who has played will tell you it is filled with frustration and disappointment. It is on the occasions when you strike the perfect shot, when the ball goes exactly as you visualized it during your pre-shot routine, that you realize what you are capable of. If only briefly, you truly realize your potential.
Such is life... disappointment and struggle may seem constant, but the days when we touch our potential make it all worthwhile. Team Dean '08 had one of those days where we played to our potential.
