OCTOBER 22, 2007 - Dean Scontras Speaks Out Against Portland School Committee

Republican Congressional Candidate to Help Gather Signatures for Recall Effort

Eliot, Maine - Dean Scontras, candidate for Maine's 1st Congressional District, issued a statement today regarding the decision by the Portland School Committee to allow the birth control pill, RU-486 (the "Morning After Pill") to be distributed to students at King Middle School without parental consent.

“I am appalled by the vote by the Portland School Committee,” said Scontras.

“To have public school officials making these types decisions and cutting the parents and guardians out of the process makes this even more insidious. This is more than just an embarrassment for Maine and Portland. It appears to be part of the larger agenda by secular progressives to lower our cultural standards, and they are using our young people to do so.”

"This irresponsible action is indicative of the erosion of our cultural values. To have public schools playing a lead role in this is an outrage, and sends exactly the wrong message to our young people. Republicans need leaders who are not afraid to stand up for our core beliefs and values and I look forward to engaging these types of issues head-on during my candidacy for Congress,” concluded Scontras.

Dean Scontras will assist the Portland Republican City Committee tonight the Portland Club located at 156 State Street from 5:00PM-6:30PM as they gather signatures in an effort to recall the School Committee members responsible for the vote.

Dean also plans to attend the Portland School Committee’s public meeting this Wednesday, October 24th at 7:00PM at the Portland Arts and Technology High School (PATHS) located at 196 Allen Ave.

A third generation native of Kittery and graduate of the University of Maine at Orono, Dean Scontras is the current fundraising frontrunner in the race for the Republican nomination in Maine’s 1st Congressional District. Dean currently resides in Eliot Maine with his wife Dawn and their two children, Jack and Zoe.
