PORTLAND, Maine - On the eve of Superbowl XLII, Republican Congressional Candidate Dean Scontras received a major endorsement from former New England Patriots Head Coach Dick MacPherson. Coach MacPherson was born and raised in Old Town, Maine, graduated from Maine Maritime Academy and served honorably in the United States Air Force.

"Dean comes from a strong family and was raised with strong principles," said Coach MacPherson. "He is a tenacious competitor, with tireless energy and a boundless spirit. He will make a worthy candidate and a Congressman that Maine can be proud of!"

Jack Cosgrove, current Head Coach of the University of Maine Black Bears, also weighed in with his endorsement.

"If Dean Scontras models leadership as a Congressman in the same manner he did as a wide receiver in our Black Bear football program, the state of Maine will score a touchdown," said Cosgrove. "He combined a disciplined work ethic with a commitment to excellence that brought him success as a Division 1 Student-Athlete. I am confident he will do the same as Maine's next Congressman."

Additionally, former UMaine Special Teams Coach John Bonamego, currently the Special Teams Coordinator for the Miami Dolphins, offered his endorsement to the Scontras for Congress Campaign.

"As someone who knew Dean as a college athlete, it does not surprise me at all that he has elected to pursue such a competitive challenge as a run for Congress, said Coach Bonamego. "Dean always had to work hard to achieve success, and being grounded in strong family values has helped him greatly. As a walk-on at UMaine, he certainly was not born on third base claiming to have hit a triple. His work ethic, determination, and the intangible qualities he possesses are the reason Dean has been, and will continue to be successful as a member of Congress."

Coach MacPherson called Scontras this week and encouraged him to draw inspiration from the Patriots winning season. "Through hard work, perseverance, and by sticking to your core principles," said MacPherson, "you can win this race and provide strong leadership for the citizens of Maine."

Dean Scontras is a third-generation Maine native, born and raised in Kittery, and a graduate of the University of Maine. Dean resides in Eliot with his wife Dawn and their two children, Jack and Zoe.
