February 27, 2008 - Scontras Proposes
debates with charlie summers
The following open letter was sent from Dean Scontras for
Congress Campaign Manager Michael Pajak to the Summers for
Congress campaign.
February 27th, 2008
To the Summers for Congress campaign:
Last night, Dean had the opportunity to contrast his views
on the United States Constitution with four of the Democrat
candidates running for Congress at a public forum in Portland.
Dean articulated a number of his issue positions to the audience
and contrasted his views with those of the other Congressional
candidates, acting as the lone Republican voice in a crowded
room.
It is important to our campaign that the Republican voters
in the 1st Congressional District be given every opportunity
to evaluate both of the Republican Congressional candidates
based on their issue positions and their approach to tackling
some of Maine's and America's toughest challenges.
There are significant policy differences between Dean and
Charlie on the issues of the economy, abortion, illegal immigration,
and healthcare. Currently, the restrictions imposed upon Charlie
by Department of Defense Directive 1344.10, which explicitly
prohibits any campaign activity or discussion of the issues
while Charlie remains on active duty, make it difficult for
both campaigns to offer a clear contrast to voters.
It was reported this week that Charlie will complete his
tour of duty early, and will return to Maine at the end of
May. Charlie's return to Maine provides both candidates an
opportunity to engage in a series of public debates on the
issues before the June 10th Primary Election.
In this spirit, we propose a series of no less than three
public debates to take place between Monday, May 26th and
Monday, June 9th. We are encouraging media outlets across
the District who are interested in hosting one of these debates
to contact our campaign directly, and we look forward to working
with your campaign to schedule these debates as soon as possible.
We ask you to please keep our campaign apprised of Charlie's
schedule, and his availability to participate in these debates
as they are finalized.
Respectfully,
Michael Pajak
Campaign Manager
Dean Scontras for Congress
