July 12th, 2007 - Dean Scontras Announces Campaign for Congress
Eliot, Maine – Dean Scontras has filed his Statement of Candidacy with the Federal Elections Commission, making formal his decision to run for Maine’s 1st Congressional District.
“I have had a desire to serve Maine people for as long as I can remember,” said Scontras.
“I’ll go to Washington in the spirit of Ronald Reagan. Reagan entered politics because he felt the rank and file of the citizenry should hold public office. I share that belief. The problems facing our nation today are daunting, and the last thing Maine needs to do is send another career politician to Washington to compound the problem, rather than work toward government reform.
“My campaign will be driven by the ideas, solutions, hopes and dreams of the citizens of Maine. I will continue the dialogue we have started over the past few months with the voters of the 1st District. Maine deserves a Congressman who understands that the best solutions to our nation’s problems come from the citizens themselves, not from the government.”
Serving as Chairman of the Dean Scontras for Congress Campaign Committee is retired executive Phineas Sprague of Cape Elizabeth. “We have many fine politicians in Congress. Now Maine has a compelling opportunity to send a businessman to Washington to deal with the crucial financial matters facing the nation,” said Sprague. “Dean Scontras can do just that.”
As part of the exploratory phase, Scontras met with groups of people in coffee shops, convenience stores, backyards and living rooms across the 1st District. “Any place I can engage in a conversation and introduce myself, I will,” Scontras offered. “I am humbled by all the encouragement I’ve received. Everywhere I go people remark that the time is right for a political outsider who can bring fresh ideas to Washington.”
Encouragement is also coming from within political circles. “Dean will make a capable, viable run in this primary election,” says former GOP Chair Joe Bruno. “He has proven himself as a smart businessman and has the capability to excel because of his perspective. He brings a fresh approach to the race and his candidacy will have broad-based appeal. He has raised the bar for anyone that is going to run in the primary.”
Former Senate Republican Leader Paul Davis met with Scontras early in the process. “Dean will make a fine Representative for Maine's 1st District. His commitment to his family reflects his strong character. He approaches each issue thoughtfully and in a manner consistent with core Republican values. I'm encouraged by his candidacy,” said Davis.
A third generation native of Kittery and graduate of the University of Maine at Orono, Scontras has been at the center of several successful high-tech business ventures over the past fifteen years. Dean currently resides in Eliot Maine with his wife Dawn and their two children, Jack and Zoe.
